Get to know It Is Well Soap

When at a big box store, or even a health food store, we often pick the soaps and moisturizers that are on sale or that have a special character our children like, or even a smell it has, even if the smell is something potentially harmful. I know I'm guilty of it at times!

When we have sensitive skin, we may realize the issues with "regular" products, but really, it is important for all of us to know what we're using and what it may do to our body. In all reality, the EPA and the Environmental Working Group has told us of the dangers of many of the items in these products and it is time to make a change.

It Is Well Soap is a creation of a Phoenix-couple who really wanted to be able to do more for their family and have a great product. Here's what they had to say to Attached Moms

Deodorant by It is Well Soaps
Thank you for your interest in wanting to know more about us. We are a family of 6 dedicated to serving Jesus Christ and fulfilling His will for our family. Our goal is to glorify God through this business adventure by fully utilizing the talents and knowledge that He has equipped us with. We are also dedicated to providing our customers with a superior, high quality product.

We decided to go forth on this adventure because we could not find quality skin care products that were natural and effective. We also wanted products without harsh chemicals that would damage our skin. We had all sorts of rashes and cracked skin that was irritating and would not go away. These issues were on our hands, bottoms, cheeks and lips. We tried to treat these issues with different lotions and creams but as soon as we would put them on, our skin would burn. So we started to research ingredients to make our own lotion to help with these skin issues. We use natural ingredients that would moisturize our skin and not burn when we put it on. The lotion is very good and did help to heal the dry cracked skin that we were experiencing but the problem would consistently return.

Instead of just treating the symptoms, we wanted to figure out what was causing the problems. We tried all different soaps for washing dishes, bathing and daily hand wash but nothing was working. With having 4 young children, there is always someone or something that needs washing. We decided to start researching and learning how to make our own soap. We were very happy with the lotion and thought that a good home made soap would be icing on the cake! Since we have been using our home made soap and lotions, we have not had any skin issues at all!
The products on this site are the result of our research along with the knowledge that God has provided us with. We are praying that these products will be a blessing to you and your family as much as they have been to ours.

Reminder - Label requirements for soaps, not necessary

Have you ever purchased a new soap or cleaning product only to find yourself with red splotches a few days later? You may be able to narrow down WHICH product is causing the irritation, but shouldn't we inflamed to know that there are no requirements for companies to tell us WHAT they are putting into their products?

The Environmental Working Group sent out a great reminder today and I'd love to reiterate that there are potential dangers hiding in your every day soaps.

Check out how to DECODE potential labels, since government doesn't require proper labeling of ingredients.

Read their report on cleaners and find out which may be best for your family.

For example, they give 7th Generations Natural Toilet Bowl cleaner an "A" rating and then goes into detail, item by item, as to what causes for concern their could be.

Indoor air pollution from your cleaning supplies?

Many chemicals we expose are children, animals and our selves to are toxic. In the desert southwest, summer times means very little air circulation, so it is likely even more important to pay attention to what chemicals are polluting in door air.

We use EcoLogical Maids to help us keep us up on housework and they use safe cleaners. For our general cleaning we are also conscientious. I was recently emailed a link and thought other "green" families would be interested!

Piddle Pads for Elimination Communication - Potty Training Bed Pads

Wet beds are no fun. Washing sheets is not in my top 10 list, and neither is airing out mattresses. Mattress protectors are common, but not all mattress protectors are created equal.

Here are a few things to look for:

- waterproof versus water resistance (AKA, will the pee go through)
- chemicals used in processing
- other toxic issues

Rubber mattress covers may be extremely water proof, but you have to worry about puddles AND the fact that a face-down baby may not be able to breathe. If you decide to still use rubber or plastic, put an extra barrier between the sheet and the mattress, such as a thick cotton towel.

Plastic often contains multiple chemicals. Breathing in chemical for 12+ hours per day is not a good idea. Consider using items that are processed without chemicals.

Most regular mattresses are chock full of chemicals. Wool is naturally fire resisistant, so fire retardants such as PBDEs are not required in the creation of those products.

Personally we have Naturepedic - Waterproof Pad and we do not have leak problems. It protects our mattress and made of organic cotton that is extremely tightly woven. I am confident in the brand and love that it is natural, free of chemicals and keeps our mattresses from needing a scrub when we have accidents or leaks.

We have a front loader and they wash easily in "bulky" mode. I usually line dry, but they do dry in the drier but do take a bit longer than a standard poly-based mattress protector.

What's the right way to protect that expensive mattress?

Check out the great sale on these non-toxic, wool-based (may need to be lanolized) piddle pads.

I put this cl ue twice so you can understand that I put all my clues at the bottom. Both lead to the same place... ! the first week of august is this month. which CODE makes me boycott a large conglomerate? look for something with pfizer in the topic

Challenge - Chemical Soap use

I have to admit that, in general, I'm the one who steams up the bathroom. I have this belief that I can only get clean if the water is nearly boiling hot. Okay, we live in an apartment and the thermostat is not set *that* hot, but really, I like a hot shower. The fact is, though, we can get clean wthout the hot water. We can also get clean without the chemical soaps. An item that we currently use sparingly, but will use pretty much exclusively once we use up all of our "chemicals" is soap nuts. No, soap nuts are not people who go crazy over getting clean. Soap nuts (sapindus) are native to warm climates and may also be called a soapberry. Soap nuts contain saponin which is a natural detergent which is used to clean clothes, wash your hair, and other items. It is great for sensitive skin.
So my challenge to you is to take a load of your regular clothes, put them in the wash, without soap, and then open up your washer (assuming it isn't front loading!) mid agitation and watch how the suds! It is no wonder people with sensitive skin (like me and my daughter) have problems with chemical detergents like Tide! They stay in your clothes!
For more information on soapnuts, just do a quick internet search...
